US Commerce Secretary Lutnick announced that Anthropic has settled its differences with the government, leading to the removal of relevant export restrictions and signaling a thaw in relations between the two entities. Nevertheless, Emil Michael, the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, quickly countered by stating that the Pentagon would continue to regard Anthropic as a supply chain risk. This discrepancy arises from two distinct issues: the Department of Commerce had imposed export controls out of concern that AI models could be exploited for cyberattacks; conversely, the Pentagon sees Anthropic as a supply chain threat due to the limitations it has placed on the military's use of its models. At present, Anthropic has initiated legal action, and last week, a federal judge sided with its arguments, mandating the government to lift the prohibition. However, the Pentagon remains resolute, and the ongoing legal and policy tussle between the two parties is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon.
