Recently, Chris Malone, who was at the helm of OpenAI's data center, has stepped down. His departure marks the latest in a recent spate of executive exits from the company. Malone came on board at OpenAI in March 2025, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his previous roles as a distinguished engineer at both Meta and Google, where he was in charge of data center infrastructure.

He played a key role in OpenAI's infrastructure development blueprint. This plan initially set out to invest around $600 billion in computing power by 2030, a figure that was later increased to approximately $750 billion. Malone's exit occurs against a backdrop of heightened tension in the U.S. regarding AI infrastructure development. There's been a swift expansion in data center construction, coupled with a rising tide of social opposition.

In the meantime, several other top-level executives at OpenAI have also recently left their posts. These include Denise Dresser, who headed up the revenue division; Brad Lightcap, a long-standing executive within the company; and Fidji Simo, who was in charge of product and business operations. Despite this frequent churn of executives, OpenAI's CFO, Sarah Friar, has made it clear that the company still has its sights set on going public by 2027.
