Robot startup Generalist has recently announced the successful closure of a new funding round, raising nearly $200 million. This round was spearheaded by 8VC, bringing the total Series B funding to an impressive $600 million and catapulting the company's valuation to a staggering $3 billion. Established in 2024 by a team of former Google DeepMind researchers and ex-Boston Dynamics engineers, Generalist quickly garnered early-stage investments from a diverse array of institutions and individual investors.
Generalist is dedicated to pioneering AI foundational models that can seamlessly collaborate with a wide range of robots. Its innovative 1.5-generation model has already demonstrated the capability to enable robots to swiftly acquire new skills by simply observing brief video demonstrations. At present, the company is working closely with a select clientele to further refine and enhance the model's performance.
The robotics sector is currently witnessing a significant uptick in research and development efforts focused on general-purpose task models, with numerous companies striving to assert their dominance in this burgeoning field. However, it's important to note that achieving technological breakthroughs and realizing the full commercial potential of these general-purpose models will still require a considerable amount of time and effort.
