The board of directors at South Korean internet behemoth Kakao has given the green light to a comprehensive company split initiative. This move will see the creation of two distinct entities: Kakao AI, dedicated to artificial intelligence platforms, and Kakao X, which will concentrate on investment, fintech, content, and mobility sectors. The division of the net asset book value between the two new companies has been set at a ratio of 36% for Kakao AI and 64% for Kakao X, with existing shareholders set to receive shares in accordance with this split. Following the restructuring, Kakao AI will take charge of KakaoTalk and the AI-related businesses, with ambitious plans to transform KakaoTalk into an intelligent agent-based AI interface. Kakao is scheduled to convene an extraordinary shareholders' meeting on December 17, with the split anticipated to be finalized by January 1, 2027. Subsequently, on January 27, Kakao AI will be relisted, and Kakao X will undergo a listing change.
