On August 11, Min Kyung-seol, the Director of the Innovation Growth Office at South Korea's Ministry of Finance, announced that South Korea is poised to channel an additional KRW 600 billion to 1 trillion (equivalent to approximately US$707 million) into a newly minted sovereign wealth fund next year. This fund is specifically designed to bolster strategic sectors, notably AI. The ultimate investment sum could surpass initial projections, contingent upon the specific objectives and financial requirements.
Beyond AI, the fund will also prioritize infrastructure development in areas such as robotics, energy, batteries, and power grids. Furthermore, nuclear energy, space exploration, and quantum technologies are also being considered for investment. Min Kyung-seol clarified that, at present, there are no concrete plans for the fund to make direct investments in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
