As reported by Phys.org on August 1, a collaborative team of scientists from Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and Fermi Lab have successfully developed an AI scheduling system. This innovative system is designed to autonomously manage and strategize the "gaze direction" of telescopes, marking what the team considers a significant leap forward in the pursuit of an "autonomous observatory." Presently, the system's decision-making prowess is on a par with that of human schedulers. It has already been deployed at the Victor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope in Chile, where it orchestrates observations using the 570-megapixel "Dark Energy Camera."
