Google's DeepMind has made the decision to dissolve the AlphaFold team. Notably, this system had previously earned the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Hassabis and Jumper, thanks to its groundbreaking achievements in predicting protein structures. Presently, DeepMind is recalibrating its scientific research approach. A significant portion of AlphaFold's original team members have transitioned to projects associated with the Gemini large language model, enzyme design, and other areas, or have moved to Isomorphic Labs. Nearly one-fourth of the full-time contributors have departed, with key figures like Jumper opting to join Anthropic. DeepMind is moving away from assembling teams centered on individual scientific inquiries and is instead concentrating on creating research assistance systems driven by Gemini, as well as engaging in the competitive landscape of cutting-edge AI agents.
