Amazon is currently undertaking a significant overhaul of its AI strategy. Following the recent layoffs within its AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) department and the subsequent closure of the AGI Lab last week, Amazon has decided to reallocate resources from its diverse range of self-developed AI models in the Nova series. Instead, it will concentrate its efforts on the FMR cutting-edge model project, which is spearheaded by the renowned expert Pieter Abbeel. This ambitious project aims to develop a groundbreaking flagship foundational model, with expectations to debut at the highly anticipated AWS re:Invent conference this coming fall.

This strategic adjustment forms a crucial part of a wider reorganization within Amazon's AI business sector. Previously, the organizational structure of the AGI department had witnessed multiple reshuffles, with the current leadership opting for a more streamlined and focused approach. Nevertheless, it's worth noting that certain Nova products will continue to be maintained, and there's a possibility that the new models under development may also retain the Nova brand identity.

Remarkably, this significant shift in strategy occurs less than three years after the inception of the AGI department, leaving internal stakeholders grappling with a degree of uncertainty due to the lack of clear, long-term planning.
