The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and High-Level Conference on Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence (WAIC 2026) took place in Shanghai from July 17 to 20. During the main forum on the 17th, the winners of the SAIL Award (Superior AI Leader Award) and the SAIL Star Award were formally announced. Recognized as the pinnacle accolade of WAIC, the SAIL Award is widely regarded as a key indicator of innovation and leadership in the global AI landscape. Among the recipients, Assistant Professor Chen Yitong from Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s School of Integrated Circuits stood out for his groundbreaking work. His all-optical generative AI chip, LightGen, garnered significant acclaim within the field, ultimately earning the prestigious SAIL Award—the highest honor at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference.
