Brockman stated that it is too early to determine whether Yue Zhi An Mian has used 'distillation' techniques to extract output from OpenAI's models to improve its own. Yue Zhi An Mian released a more advanced open-weight model, Kimi K3, last week. The company claimed that this model surpasses all competitors in overall capabilities, except for Anthropic's Claude Fable5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6. This release has shaken the market, challenging the long-held view that the US leads China in the global AI race. Brockman mentioned that some estimates suggest China may lag only four months behind the US in model development, while other experts believe the gap could be even smaller.
