Recently, in line with the stipulations of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the European Commission has formally mandated Google to modify its Android operating system. The aim is to grant competitors' AI assistants parity in accessing system functionalities and data. Under these new regulations, third-party AI assistants will enjoy the same level of access to features on Android devices as Google's proprietary AI services, such as Gemini. This move aims to dismantle the current barrier where third-party AI assistants have restricted access to certain pivotal functions of the Android system.
Simultaneously, Google is also obligated to share search data with third-party search engines, fostering a more competitive market environment and spurring innovative growth. The European Commission has laid out a timeline for Google to execute these measures. Starting from January 2027, Google will begin sharing search data with qualified third-party search engines. Moreover, users will be able to experience the enhanced Android system from July 2027 onwards.
