He is set to play a pivotal role in the research and development of Visual Language Models (VLMs). It's worth noting that this isn't Tencent's first foray into luring talent away from OpenAI. On December 17th of the previous year, Tencent unveiled a restructuring of its large - scale model R&D framework. As part of this overhaul, new departments were formed, namely AI Infra, AI Data, and Data Computing Platform. In a strategic move, Yao Shunyu, a former senior researcher at OpenAI, was appointed as the Chief AI Scientist of the 'CEO/President's Office.' Additionally, he took on the leadership roles of both the AI Infra Department and the Large Language Model Department. This development sparked significant buzz across social media platforms at the time.
