According to TechCrunch, Devin Kim, a former engineer at Elon Musk's xAI, filed a lawsuit in a California court on Tuesday, accusing xAI and its parent company SpaceX of firing him for raising concerns about AI safety. Kim left xAI in September 2025, just as SpaceX was preparing for a public market listing that is expected to be one of the largest IPOs in history. The lawsuit alleges that during his work on xAI's AI chatbot Grok, Kim repeatedly warned that the company was not prioritizing safety, noting that Grok could potentially facilitate discriminatory speech and the dissemination of information about weapons of mass destruction. Kim claims he attempted to implement safety measures for Grok but faced pushback from company leadership, ultimately leading to his dismissal. Positioning himself as a whistleblower, Kim alleges that xAI's disregard for AI safety in multiple areas constitutes unlawful conduct. In the lawsuit, Kim seeks compensatory and punitive damages and requests that the court declare xAI and SpaceX's actions illegal.
