On May 24, the University of Oulu in Finland issued a press statement announcing that its researchers, working in tandem with international peers, have created an AI chatbot called Forty. Leveraging the 'cognitive inoculation' technique, this chatbot aids individuals in developing resilience against misleading health information. In recent times, the swift advancement of generative AI tools has simplified the mass production and distribution of false or deceptive content. However, AI can also serve as a powerful tool in the fight against misinformation. The core concept of the Forty chatbot is to expose users to 'attenuated versions' of misconceptions in a controlled setting, thereby bolstering their ability to withstand misinformation in real-world scenarios. The research team explained that this approach mirrors the way the human body receives vaccinations to fortify the immune system.
