A team of researchers, including prominent figures Pan Jianwei and Lu Chaoyang from the University of Science and Technology of China, working in conjunction with several esteemed institutions such as the Jinan Institute of Quantum Technology and Shanxi University, have triumphantly engineered a programmable quantum computing prototype dubbed 'Jiuzhang-4'. This cutting-edge prototype boasts an impressive 1024 quantum squeezed state inputs and 8176 modes, marking a historic milestone by enabling, for the very first time, the precise manipulation and detection of quantum states involving up to 3050 photons. 'Jiuzhang-4' has exhibited remarkable prowess in tackling Gaussian boson sampling tasks, achieving a computational speed that is a staggering 1054 times faster than that of El Capitan, currently recognized as the world's swiftest supercomputer. This achievement unequivocally underscores its formidable 'quantum computational supremacy'. The groundbreaking paper detailing these findings was published in May 2026, Beijing time.
