In an internal memo, Bill Staples, CEO of the DevOps platform GitLab, revealed that the company plans to lay off employees in order to reserve funds for seizing market opportunities in the AI agent era. The layoffs are not aimed at optimizing AI business or cutting costs; the saved funds will primarily be used for business reinvestment. GitLab will streamline its management, reorganize its R&D teams, and reduce the number of countries it operates in. At the same time, it will leverage agentic AI to refactor (restructure) internal processes for improved efficiency. The CEO stated that job allocations will be reevaluated to ensure optimized speed and customer outcomes, with AI accelerating some tasks and certain positions being expanded to expedite progress.
