On May 5, 2026, Meta announced the expansion of technical safety protections for teenage accounts to 27 EU countries and their first-time application on the Facebook platform in the United States. This move aims to address external criticism regarding insufficient protection for minors. Meta uses AI to analyze contextual clues in user profiles to determine age, streamline reporting processes, and enhance its ability to block minors from registering new accounts. Previously, the EU had preliminarily determined that Meta violated the Digital Services Act by failing to effectively prevent children under 13 from using its platform. If the violation is ultimately confirmed, Meta may face substantial fines.
