On April 29 (local time in Brussels), after 12 hours of intense negotiations, EU member states and the European Parliament were unable to forge a consensus on the so-called “watered-down” artificial intelligence regulations. As a result, the discussions have been postponed until next month. The proposed amendments pertain to the Artificial Intelligence Act, which is slated to come into effect in August 2024. Originally, key provisions of this act were scheduled for phased implementation starting this year. This adjustment is a component of the EU’s “Digital Comprehensive Revision” initiative, which seeks to streamline digital regulations and enable European companies to keep pace with their American and Asian rivals in the fiercely competitive AI landscape.
