On April 25, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly apologized for not promptly informing Canadian police about the activities of Jesse Van Rooeselaar. Van Rooeselaar is the suspect in a mass shooting in Canada this February that left eight people dead. In a letter on April 23, Altman expressed his regret that OpenAI did not contact law enforcement regarding Van Rooeselaar's situation and committed to seeking ways to prevent similar tragedies from recurring. Previously, OpenAI's automated review system flagged messages from Van Rooeselaar describing violent scenarios and banned his account, but the company ultimately did not contact the authorities.
