Tech behemoth Oracle is moving forward with extensive layoffs, having already eliminated more than 700 roles in California in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. Based on media reports and analyst forecasts, the anticipated total number of global layoffs could range from 20,000 to 30,000, representing roughly 18% of its global workforce, which stands at 162,000 employees. On the morning of March 31, local time, Oracle dispatched layoff emails to approximately 30,000 employees worldwide, informing them of the immediate termination of their employment and the simultaneous revocation of their system access privileges. These layoffs span multiple departments, including engineering, cloud services, technical support, and healthcare. The region most severely impacted is India, where about 12,000 employees are facing job cuts. The main impetus behind these layoffs is to generate cash flow for the development of AI infrastructure, with an estimated annual release of $8 billion to $10 billion in free cash flow. Regarding severance packages, Oracle provides a standard offering that begins with four weeks of base salary, plus an additional week of salary for each year of service, with a maximum cap of 26 weeks of base salary.
