In a letter to Pentagon leaders, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve VanBurckle announced that Palantir's Maven artificial intelligence system will become a formally recorded project of the U.S. military, ensuring its long-term and medium-term application of weapons targeting technology within the armed forces. As a command and control software platform, the system can analyze battlefield data and identify targets, with the implementation expected to take effect before the end of the current fiscal year (in September). The memorandum requires the transfer of Maven oversight to the Pentagon's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office within 30 days, with subsequent contracts to be managed by the Army. Palantir emphasized that its software does not make lethal decisions, and humans remain responsible for target selection and approval.
