Elon Musk's AI startup xAI is experiencing a wave of departures among its co-founders. Following the exits of several co-founders, including Toby Pohlen and Jimmy Ba, since January this year, Zihang Dai also left earlier this week, while Guodong Zhang is set to depart in the coming days. This will leave only two members from the original 11-person founding team assembled in 2023. Zhang was responsible for key projects at xAI. Musk has acknowledged that xAI's Grok lags behind competitors in programming capabilities, and the company is striving to catch up. Recently, xAI recruited new staff, with Musk believing the company needs a major internal overhaul and a ground-up reconstruction. Since January this year, xAI has laid off dozens of employees and undergone previous restructuring efforts. The restructuring occurred shortly after the departure of two direct subordinates, coinciding with xAI's acquisition by SpaceX. Toby Pohlen, who was in charge of the Macrohard project, subsequently left, causing the project to stall internally. Musk stated that the project is now advancing in collaboration with Tesla.
