Back in December of last year, Disney fired off a cease-and-desist letter to Google, leveling accusations that Google's AI products, such as Veo, Nano Banana, and Gemini, were blatantly infringing upon Disney's copyrights on a massive scale. The letter also demanded an immediate cessation of the infringement and the use of Disney's intellectual property (IP) for model training. Once the letter came to light, Google made it clear that it would keep up the cooperation and maintain open lines of communication with Disney, all while rolling out a copyright control mechanism. Fast forward nearly two months, and foreign media outlets have reported that Google's tools, including Gemini and Nano Banana, have begun refusing to generate content featuring Disney characters. Identical prompts are now being blocked. Nevertheless, users can still whip up related IP content by uploading photos of Disney characters and pairing them with text prompts. On top of that, during the same timeframe, Disney struck a $1 billion deal with OpenAI, licensing its characters to the generative video application Sora.
