Sakana AI, a Japanese firm specializing in the development of artificial intelligence models and applications, revealed on Friday that it has attracted investment from tech giant Google. As per David Ha, co-founder and CEO of Sakana AI, the valuation derived from this investment aligns closely with that of the company's most recent funding round. This has propelled the company's overall valuation to a staggering $2.5 billion, excluding the newly acquired capital. Nevertheless, the precise amount invested by Google remains undisclosed.

As Japan's AI startup with the highest valuation, Sakana AI also unveiled a strategic partnership with Google. This partnership aims to harness Google's state-of-the-art AI models to drive its own technological and product development forward. Sakana AI emphasized that this collaborative effort will enable it to push the boundaries of technological innovation in the fields of automated scientific discovery and agent-based AI.

For Google, the alliance with Sakana AI presents an opportunity to bolster its market share in Japan's AI model sector, which is currently dominated by OpenAI. Established in 2023 by two former Google researchers, Sakana AI boasts a team that includes Llion Jones, one of the co-authors of Google's seminal research paper that initially proposed the Transformer model architecture. This framework now serves as the backbone for mainstream large language models, such as OpenAI's GPT and Google's Gemini.
