On January 20, Bloomberg reported that Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, emphasized at the Davos World Economic Forum that Europe must take decisive action by investing in its own open-source AI laboratories and tackling the challenges posed by high energy prices. Schmidt warned that failure to do so would result in Europe becoming heavily reliant on Chinese AI models. He highlighted a key distinction in the AI landscape: the majority of U.S. AI models are proprietary (closed-source), whereas China has emerged as a leader in developing open-source alternatives. Schmidt cautioned that if Europe does not proactively build its own AI capabilities, it risks being left with no choice but to adopt Chinese models.
