On January 17, Reuters disclosed that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is taking a closer look at a burgeoning trend among leading tech firms. Rather than opting for direct acquisitions of startups, these companies are now poaching their employees as a strategic move to access cutting-edge technology and skilled talent. This approach is widely perceived as a means to sidestep antitrust regulations. FTC Chair Ferguson emphasized that the commission will thoroughly review these 'acqui-hiring' practices to ascertain whether they are being employed to circumvent the rigorous scrutiny typically associated with mergers and acquisitions. In recent developments, Nvidia secured chip technology licensing from Groq and successfully poached its CEO. Similarly, Microsoft and Meta have also managed to onboard AI executives through analogous methods.
