On December 30, 2025, just as the New Year's bell was about to ring, U.S. tech giant Meta announced its acquisition of AI startup Butterfly Effect for billions of dollars—a company that developed the general-purpose AI agent Manus. This acquisition marks Meta's third-largest merger and acquisition deal to date, with the transaction amount ranking only behind those of WhatsApp and Scale AI. Following the acquisition, Butterfly Effect will maintain independent operations at the company, team, and product levels while undergoing deep integration with Meta's core global consumer products. Its founder, Xiao Hong, will serve as Meta's Vice President, reporting to Chief Operating Officer Javier Olivan. The Manus team, comprising approximately 100 members, is currently based in Singapore.
