Recent research has brought to light a concerning trend: more than 20% of the videos recommended to newcomers on YouTube are low-quality, clickbait-laden content generated by AI, often dubbed as 'AI swill'. A comprehensive survey was carried out by video editing firm Kapwing, encompassing 15,000 widely-viewed YouTube channels across the globe. The findings revealed that videos from 278 channels were exclusively composed of this type of low-grade content. Impressively, these channels have amassed a staggering 63 billion views and boast 221 million subscribers, translating to an estimated annual revenue of around $117 million. Upon creating new YouTube accounts for the purpose of this study, researchers observed that out of the initial 500 videos recommended, 104 fell into the 'AI swill' category. This classification also encompasses other forms of low-quality content designed to grab attention and generate revenue.
