The non-profit Future of Life Institute has unveiled an updated iteration of its 'AI Safety Index' report. This report highlights that the safety governance standards of prominent AI companies, including Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, and Meta, are significantly below global benchmarks. According to an evaluation by an independent expert panel, while these firms are in a fierce competition to develop superintelligence, none has formulated sufficiently robust strategies and plans to effectively manage advanced AI systems. Anthropic, although securing the highest overall score among them, only managed to obtain a D grade in the category of 'existential safety.' This indicates that the company has yet to devise adequate strategies to avert catastrophic misuse or loss of control. Furthermore, other companies also demonstrate notable deficiencies in key areas such as risk assessment, safety frameworks, governance structures, and accountability mechanisms.
