China Outpaces US in Open-Source AI Model Downloads for the First Time

On November 27th, a collaborative study conducted by MIT and Hugging Face disclosed that, during the past year, China has claimed a 17% share of the worldwide downloads of open-source AI models, marking the first instance where it has surpassed the United States, which held a 15.8% share. The DeepSeek model and Alibaba's Qwen model are the primary contributors to the majority of downloads among Chinese models. Through their strategies of providing free access and frequent updates, China's open-source AI models have significantly reduced the barriers to entry for adopting AI technology.
