Notably, GPT-4o continues to serve as a vital choice for both individual and premium subscribers of ChatGPT. In August 2025, OpenAI made an effort to switch GPT-4o with GPT-5 as the default model. However, this move was met with significant resistance from a portion of users, some of whom even viewed GPT-4o as a source of emotional solace. OpenAI has now revealed that it will officially cease API access to the GPT-4o model in February 2026, and developers will be required to finish transitioning to a new model within a three-month timeframe.
