On November 18 (local time), the 30th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) kicked off in Brazil. At this significant event, Alibaba DAMO Academy was honored with an invitation to present its cutting-edge AI technologies and share hands-on experiences in tackling climate-related issues. The academy's self-developed meteorological large model, named 'Baguan', has already been deployed in regions like Zhejiang, Shandong, and Beijing. Its application has led to a remarkable reduction of over 50% in the prediction error of typhoon intensity. In a bid to further strengthen long-term climate early warning capabilities, DAMO Academy unveiled a comprehensive upgrade of the 'Baguan' large model during the conference. This upgraded version is now capable of predicting major global meteorological events, including El Niño and cold waves, a full 12 months in advance. This breakthrough provides robust support for global disaster prevention and relief efforts, as well as socio-economic planning on a global scale.
