On this Thursday, Apple unveiled an updated version of its App Store Review Guidelines. These new guidelines mandate that all iOS apps must clearly reveal the identities of any entities receiving user data and secure explicit user consent prior to sharing personal data with third-party artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The updated rule, now enshrined in Section 5.1.2(i), underscores that any scenario involving user-identifiable information must undergo a notification and authorization process through direct in-app interactions. Simply providing links to privacy policies will no longer suffice to meet these standards. This marks the inaugural inclusion of third-party AI within the purview of data-sharing regulations, with apps that fail to comply facing potential removal from the App Store.
