According to the British Financial Times, Yann LeCun, Meta's Chief AI Scientist and recipient of the Turing Award, is set to depart from the company in the upcoming months to embark on his own entrepreneurial venture. This move comes amid Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's push to revamp the company's AI operational framework in a bid to keep pace with competitors like OpenAI and Google.

LeCun, who has long helmed Meta's Fundamental AI Research Lab (FAIR), has been dedicated to long-term foundational research. His proposed concept of "world models" stands out as a notable endeavor, aiming to decipher the physical world using video and spatial data to attain intelligence on par with humans. However, Zuckerberg's strategic emphasis has pivoted towards swiftly rolling out AI models and products. This shift has led to fundamental rifts between the two on the trajectory of AI development.

This summer, Zuckerberg made a substantial investment of $14.3 billion, recruiting 28-year-old Alexandr Wang to spearhead a new "superintelligence" team. He also secured a 49% stake in Wang's company. Simultaneously, Zuckerberg implemented several internal structural overhauls and trimmed resources for long-term research teams such as FAIR. These alterations have sidelined LeCun's influence at Meta, ultimately prompting his decision to leave and concentrate on propelling the research and application of "world models".
