Google has recently introduced its most formidable AI chip yet, dubbed Ironwood. This chip represents Google's seventh-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) and is set to be fully accessible in the upcoming weeks. According to reports, the chip has been undergoing testing since April, boasting a computational speed that is over four times faster than its predecessor. Major clients are already eagerly awaiting its availability. AI startup Anthropic has plans to employ up to 1 million of these new TPUs to power its Claude model. The new TPU is capable of linking up to 9,216 chips within a single pod, effectively eradicating any data transmission bottlenecks. In the fierce competition to construct AI infrastructure, Google is vying with tech behemoths like Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta. Its TPU, as a custom-designed chip, provides substantial benefits in terms of cost, performance, and efficiency.
