On November 5, 2025, Google made an announcement regarding the launch of 'Project Suncatcher.' This project is designed to establish a space-based AI infrastructure by deploying a constellation of compact, solar-powered satellites in low Earth orbit. The project's blueprint envisions satellites outfitted with Google's in-house-developed TPU chips. These satellites will be interconnected through free-space optical links. By harnessing space-based solar power, which boasts an efficiency eight times that of ground-based systems and offers a nearly uninterrupted energy supply, the project aims to bolster AI computing capabilities while curbing the consumption of ground-based resources. Google has outlined plans to team up with Planet to launch two prototype satellites in early 2027. This move is intended to verify the viability of operating TPUs in orbit and facilitating distributed learning.
