Mercor has announced the successful completion of a $350 million funding round. This round was led by Felicis and saw participation from prominent investors including Benchmark, General Catalyst, and Robinhood Ventures. The newly acquired funds will be allocated to expand Mercor's talent network, upgrade its matching system, and enhance the efficiency of service delivery.
Founded by three individuals who were part of the 'Thiel Fellowship' program, Mercor initially began as a recruitment firm. It later transitioned into specializing in high-skilled professional hiring, with a focus on supporting AI model training. Currently, the company manages a workforce of over 30,000 contract workers.
In June of this year, following Meta's acquisition of a partial stake in Scale AI, Mercor capitalized on the opportunity to pivot into the data labeling services sector. With Scale AI's perceived neutrality coming under increased scrutiny, several research labs decided to terminate their partnerships with it. This development created significant growth opportunities for Mercor.
However, Mercor still confronts fierce competition in the data labeling industry. Key competitors in this space include Surge AI, Turing AI, and Invisible Technologies, all of which are actively vying for market share.
