On Thursday, The Information magazine cited sources revealing that Alibaba and Baidu have initiated the use of self-developed chips for training AI models, thereby partially substituting Nvidia chips. To be specific, Alibaba has been employing its self-developed chips for training small AI models since the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, Baidu is making efforts to train the latest iteration of its ERNIE Bot using Kunlun P800 chips. This strategic move signifies a substantial transformation within China's technology and AI sectors. Previously, companies in these sectors had relied extensively on Nvidia's high-performance processors. The impetus behind this change stems from a combination of factors: the tightening of U.S. export restrictions on advanced AI chips to China and the Chinese government's advocacy for the adoption of domestic autonomous technologies. Nonetheless, it is noteworthy that neither Alibaba nor Baidu has entirely phased out the use of Nvidia chips. Both companies continue to leverage Nvidia's offerings for the development of their most advanced AI models.
