On June 4, a coalition of U.S. business groups stated that the global shortage of memory chips, driven by the artificial intelligence boom, is posing an increasingly severe risk to various industries, including automakers and medical device manufacturers. The coalition has called on the Trump administration to assist in increasing the supply of these critical components. On Wednesday, nine trade associations sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent and Commerce Secretary Lutnick, warning that the shortage of memory chips could disrupt critical supply chains and drive up consumer goods prices in the short term. The coalition pointed out that the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers has consumed a significant portion of memory chip production capacity, leading to 'soaring memory chip prices and reduced supply to the manufacturing and consumer markets.' In the letter, industry groups urged the Trump administration to collaborate with memory chip manufacturers and purchasers to expand production capacity within the jurisdictions of the United States and its allies. They also suggested leveraging trade agreements or programs related to the CHIPS Act to secure supply chains and prioritize supply across various market segments.
