Amazon's autonomous driving subsidiary, Zoox, has secured approval from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to test its self-driving vehicles without conventional controls such as steering wheels. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the US vehicle safety regulatory body, has granted Zoox an exemption from federal vehicle safety standards for its custom-built autonomous vehicles. This decision follows extensive discussions between NHTSA and Zoox, which first introduced its self-driving vehicle in 2022.
