Simphiwe Hamilton, the Director-General of the department, emphasized that the United States is South Africa's third-largest trading partner, following the European Union and China, and that this tariff policy will hit industries such as automobile manufacturing and agricultural product processing particularly hard. According to statistics from South Africa's Statistics Agency, the national unemployment rate stood at 32.9% in the first quarter of 2025, with youth unemployment reaching an alarming 46.1%.
