After a protracted battle spanning three administrations, Hong Kong has finally resolved the issue of legalizing online ride-hailing services. Since Uber's entrance into the market in 2014, the quest to legitimize these services has been fraught with controversy, leading to extreme actions such as taxi driver strikes. However, the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government recently submitted a comprehensive regulatory framework for online ride-hailing services to the Legislative Council, effectively legalizing the industry. This framework establishes clear standards for drivers, vehicles, and platforms, ensuring the safety and quality of services. The policy is anticipated to come into effect as early as the end of next year, heralding the official and lawful operation of online ride-hailing services in Hong Kong.
