On July 16, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) informed automakers that, pursuant to the Tax and Budget Act signed by President Trump, penalties for failing to meet average fuel economy standards will be lifted for the 2022 model year onward. This act repeals the relevant penalty provisions in the 1975 Energy Act, anticipated to save automakers approximately $200 million. Prior to this, the Stellantis Group and General Motors had incurred penalties amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars due to non-compliance with these standards.
