On July 11, rumors circulated that German automaker Volkswagen and its Chinese joint venture partner, SAIC Motor, intended to close their Nanjing factory by the end of the year. However, according to a July 11 report by Germany's Handelsblatt, these claims stemmed from insider sources. Should this prove true, it would mark the first time Volkswagen has fully shuttered a vehicle manufacturing plant within China. Nonetheless, SAIC Volkswagen swiftly responded, stating that production and sales at the Nanjing facility were functioning normally and that inaccuracies were present in the German media report.
