In July 2025, the SAIC Volkswagen Nanjing Plant, established in 2008 with an annual production capacity of 360,000 vehicles and primarily known for manufacturing models like the Passat and Superb, officially ceased operations. The closure is attributed to the dwindling demand for fuel vehicles amidst the surge of new energy vehicles, coupled with excess capacity and outdated production equipment. This strategic decision aims to streamline production capacity allocation and concentrate efforts on the manufacturing of new energy vehicles.
