Recently, several Chinese tourists have encountered exorbitant compensation demands from car rental companies following self-driving tours in Iceland. Despite purchasing the highest level of comprehensive insurance, tourists have been required to pay up to 2.43 million kronur (approximately 143,000 RMB) for minor damage caused by sand and dust on the car exterior. Some tourists have reported that the car rental company did not raise any issues at the time of vehicle return, only to receive compensation bills after returning home. The car rental platform has responded by clarifying that insurance coverage has its limitations and advises tourists to avoid driving during sandstorm conditions when renting a car.
