In May, UK car production experienced a significant decline of 32.8% year-on-year, marking the steepest drop for that month since 1949. This steep fall was primarily attributed to factory closures and the impact of the US tariff policy. Exports to the EU and the US witnessed notable decreases of 22.5% and 55.4%, respectively. The imposition of a 25% tariff on imported cars by the US has disrupted the global supply chain, prompting numerous automakers to consider relocating their production lines. Consequently, the UK manufacturing sector has experienced a contraction. Nonetheless, the UK-US trade agreement offers a glimmer of hope, as it allows certain British-made cars to enter the US market with reduced tariffs, sending a positive signal for the future.
