BMW announces its intention to revitalize the range-extender hybrid system, with the pioneering application set for the next-generation X5 models. Overseas automotive authority, Autocar, reports that BMW previously experimented with this technology in the 2013 i3 model, incorporating a two-cylinder gasoline engine to extend range. However, the outcome was less than satisfactory, leading to its discontinuation in 2018. This time around, BMW's renewed focus on the range-extender hybrid system aims to tackle the challenge of inadequate charging infrastructure. The anticipated new system promises a driving range exceeding 1000 kilometers.

BMW, in collaboration with its partner ZF, is jointly pushing forward the related engineering advancements. The new system is designed to keep the engine operating within its optimal RPM range, enhancing fuel efficiency, lowering emissions, and simplifying design. Furthermore, it is envisioned to be more straightforward to develop and cost-effective compared to traditional hybrid systems.
