On Friday, Japan's Asahi Shimbun reported that Japan has revised its stance on U.S. auto tariffs, no longer seeking a full repeal of the 25% tariff. Instead, it has proposed a novel mechanism that advocates for tariff reductions based on each country's contributions to the U.S. automotive sector. At present, Japan's chief tariff negotiator, Akira Akazawa, is engaged in the fifth round of negotiations in Washington with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, among other officials.
