On Thursday, the U.S. Senate voted against California's initiative to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035, a measure that had been embraced by 11 other states, collectively accounting for one-third of the American automotive market. The outcome of this vote will be forwarded to President Trump, with the objective of revoking an exemption granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during the previous administration of President Biden. This exemption had permitted California to set a mandate requiring at least 80% of all new vehicles sold in the state to be electric by 2035.
